Statement:
death of Dr O'Donoghue AC

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Lowitja O'Donoghue AC.

I had the privilege of spending time with her when her biography was published. She was funny and feisty. Even in her old age, she had a rare magnetic energy.

These special qualities and her remarkable intelligence made her an incredible advocate.

Dr O'Donoghue worked tirelessly throughout her 91 years to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Her important leadership contributed to many significant moments in history, including the negotiations that led to native title legislation and the Apology to the Stolen Generations.

She leaves an indelible legacy that will be felt by generations to come.

I extend my deepest sympathies to Dr O'Donoghue's family and friends.

The Hon. Julia Gillard AC | 27th Prime Minister of Australia
